Manchester Central continues setting Wi-Fi standards

Manchester Central is making its free Wi-Fi even faster as it continues to move ahead of the pack with industry-leading innovations.

In January 2013, Manchester Central, the leading events, conference and exhibition venue in the North of England, became the first major venue in the UK to provide free Wi-Fi to all.

Manchester Central has now built on this industry-first by increasing its internet connection to a 1 GB service, making it much faster and increasing its capacity.

Angie Robinson, Chief Executive of Manchester Central, said: “When we became the first in the UK to offer free Wi-Fi to all, we were determined to continue to build on our offer. Our increased internet capability means that as well as being the first to offer free Wi-Fi to all, we also now offer some of the fastest internet in the business.

“This is all about putting our customers first in everything we do to provide a world-class service.”

An investment in the Wi-Fi infrastructure in 2012 increased the venue’s capabilities so it could provide 100% cover for Wi-Fi across all 21,000sqm of event space at Manchester Central.

The free Wi-Fi for all (including exhibitors) has been hugely popular during events, conferences, and exhibitions with several hundred people often using free Wi-Fi at any one time during events. The increased internet capability means that even if the venue is at capacity (10,400), every person in the venue could use the free Wi-Fi and still receive a fast and reliable service.

Manchester-based internet service provider Metronet (UK) provides Manchester Central’s internet connection to visitors. Metronet (UK) provides a combination of fibre and radio connections to ensure Wi-Fi connections are failsafe, guaranteeing Wi-Fi ‘uptime’ in all circumstances at Manchester Central.

Elliott Mueller, CEO of Metronet UK, said, “It’s very exciting to be part of such an innovative move right on our door step in the heart of Manchester. We’re happy to support Manchester Central in the move to connect with their customers in a modern way. Free and fast internet is something a lot of businesses are looking into and to be involved in the first exhibition and conference centre in the UK to have offered it is something very special.”
