Members of the London City Selection team, the ‘Gherkineers’, raised £1,730 for the NSPCC in a sponsored run up the 1,200 steps of The Gherkin which took place on Sunday 23rd June. Lead by Team Captain Anita Mant from London Stock Exchange the challenge involved climbing the 38 floors of the iconic London landmark, also one of the selection’s member venues, in a race against the clock. A total of £865 was raised for the NSPCC in donations to support the six brave London City Selection team members competing in the challenge. This number was generously matched by the London Stock Exchange to reach a total of £1,730.
With one member of the team, Benjamin Flum from Doubletree Hilton, reaching the top of the 180 metre building in just 7 minutes and 10 seconds (only 2 minutes and 41 seconds slower than professional stair runner Matthias Jahn), the London City Selection team were rewarded with a glass of champagne to enjoy along with the views of the London skyline.
Ed Bolling, Chair of London City Selection and a fellow Gherkineer, said: “We were so pleased to have achieved such a great accomplishment and to have raised so much for such a worthy cause. We are all so grateful to those who supported us and donated and especially to London Stock Exchange for such a generous contribution.”
The six members to complete the challenge were:
Anita Mant (Team Captain) from London Stock Exchange
Robert Harris from London Stock Exchange
Paulina Sowa from Ironmongers’ Hall
Elizabeth Poland-Smith from One America Square
Ed Bolling from Ironmongers’ Hall
Benjamin Flum from the Doubletree Hilton
