UBM urges colleagues to get behind the Give More Challenge

UBM plc, strong supporters of the Give More campaign [www.givemore.org.uk] is urging people to give more to good causes this September as part of the Give More Challenge – a week of action to encourage as many people as possible to make a pledge to give more support to the charities or good causes they care about – and is encouraging its peers to follow suit.

The Challenge is part of the Give More campaign, a movement of over 25,000 pledges from people giving more to charities and good causes they’re passionate about.  The Challenge runs from 16-22 September 2013 and will be spearheaded by a number of partners including UBM, who are leading the way and encouraging other organisations within the media sector to become partners too.  So far over 300 pledges have been made by UBM employees. During the Challenge week Give More is asking all of us to help cover the UK with people giving more to charities and good causes.

Partners like UBM are using the week-long focus on giving to inspire their employees, contacts and networks to join in.  Some partners are using the opportunity to inspire employees to take up opportunities they offer, such as providing days off work to volunteer.

David Levin, CEO at UBM, says “We are delighted to support the Give More challenge.  Being a supporter of the Give More challenge is contribution which we delighted to make simply because it’s the right thing to do but we’re happy to recognise that doing so is a big positive for UBM too. We know that employee engagement is key to improving workplace performance and providing our staff with opportunities to support a cause close to their heart is an important way for us to do this. We know engaged staff are more productive, have lower turnover and produce better quality work. It also helps the causes we care about and improves the communities we live in.

‘We are hoping our support for the Challenge will inspire our staff to take up our amazing enabling policies such as the Matched Giving programme, Give as you Earn scheme and many volunteering opportunities, both inside and outside of work plus, importantly, also give them other ideas for how they can give more.

But the driver to back the Give More Challenge is not just altruism. New research out today, xx July supports the growing body of evidence that investing in charitable giving makes good business sense. The research suggests that it can improve brand reputation, with 29% of respondents saying ‘supporting a charity would make me more interested in hearing more about a company’s services’; it can impact staff retention, with over a third (36%) saying it would encourage them to stay at a company in the long term and; a third (34%) reporting it would make them more motivated at work.

Tamar Ghosh, Give More Campaign Director says: ‘We are urging all media companies to back the Challenge because charities and communities we care about need our help more than ever.

‘Many companies are already enabling employees to give more through generous match funding initiatives, providing days off for volunteering, and setting up give as you earn schemes, alongside often supporting charity campaigns as a business.  We hope that the Give More Challenge will provide an added boost to these programmes and supporting it couldn’t be easier; during the week we are simply asking people to pledge to give a little more in one of three simple ways from giving more money to the place where you live, work, or feel connected to, to supporting good causes while shopping online – or by giving a little time to volunteer. Companies can also use this focused time to help increase take up of their own policies around giving.

Once someone has pledged they will be put on our UK map of giving as someone making a difference.
