Facial Recognition Ticket Gates to be Installed in All Osaka Metro Stations in Preparation for Expo 2025 Osaka

Osaka Metro Co., Ltd. plans to introduce facial recognition ticket gates at all Osaka Metro stations by the end of 2024 in preparation for the 2025 Japan World Exposition in Osaka, Kansai.

The ticket gates will be developed by Takamisawa Cybernetics (President: Kazuo Takamisawa) and Panasonic Connect (CEO: Yasu Higuchi).

Users can register their face in advance through Osaka Metro’s eMetro app and link their metro ticket to their personal information in order to smoothly pass through ticket gates without needing credit cards or other payment methods.

In addition, a QR code-based digital ticket service as well as Visa touch payment are currently undergoing experimentation and are planned to be launched starting in 2024.

As a result, while the Expo is being held, transportation IC cards, QR code-based digital tickets, Visa touch payment, and facial recognition ticket gates combined are expected to be able to answer to the various needs of visitors from all over Japan and the world.
